Question:What are the main differences betwee the Trimble 5603 and S6 robot total stations?

What is the main difference between the 5603 and the S6 ? What is the main difference between the Trimble 5603 DR Std, 200 and 300 Robotic Total Station ?

Marty's Response:

The primary difference between the Trimble 5600 series instrument and the Trimble S6 is the drive system. The Trimble 5600 is a servo motor drive system and the Trimble S6 utilizes a magnetic drive system. The advantages of the S6 include: faster turning speed, low power consumption and an on-board battery that is capable of powering the instrument for 6 hours. The Trimble S6 also offers a technology called surepoint. This feature will detect any settling of the instrument and correct the pointing to the back sight automatically. It should also be pointed out that the Trimble 5600 is a technology that was originally introduced in 1994 and could very well be reaching it’s EOL (end of life) as a manufactured instrument.

As far as the 5600 DR Std, 200 and 300,these numbers refer to the reflectorless EDM range of the instrument. The standard when rating these instruments is their ability to shoot a distance without prism to a standard Kodak Gray card that has an 18% reflective surface.
