What is the difference between an R8 and R6
The Trimble R8 processor is slightly faster than its younger brother Trimble R6 and has more futures built into it like the ability to receive the L5 GPS signal. I promote this feature with a grain of salt because the first L5 satellite was just launched in March 2009 and it will be several months if not years before enough L5 satellites join it and we can expect substantial benefits from the new signal.
The Trimble R8 also comes standard with features such as; the ability to track dual satellite constellations meaning it has the ability to track both the Navstar (USA) and Glonass (Russian) satellites. Having the additional satellites are very beneficial when working under tree canopy or around multi level buildings or what are often called urban canyons. An additional feature of the Trimble R8, if purchased with an internal radio, is that it comes standard with the ability to transmit corrections within a .5 to 1 mile range depending on terrain. For small jobs not having to set up a base radio can save 5-10 minutes on each setup.
The Trimble R6 can be upgraded with all these features but each item would be an additional cost.
The price difference between the Trimble R6 and the Trimble R8 receiver is approximately $3,000.00
